El Zoológico de Chapultepec

Chapultepec Zoo is a zoo located in Chapultepec Park. It was founded July 6, 1923 by Mexican biologist Alfonso Luis Herrera using donations from private citizens and governmental funds from the Ministry of Agriculture and Development, and also with funds from the Society of Biological Studies. It houses almost 2000 animals from more than 250 species. Its is most known for its success in breeding programs of threatened species, including: giant pandas!

The zoo is divided into seven zones:

  • Tropical forest: Tigrillo, a whole variety of monkeys, Tucans, Snakes, Sloths...

  • Dessert: Turtles, Dromedaries, Wolfs...

  • Temperate forest: Bears, Zorro, Pandas, Tigers, Leopards...

  • Coastal line (poles): Penguins and Sealions

  • Grassland: Hyenas, Zebras, Giraffe, Antelopes, Tapirs, Wallabies...

  • Aviary: a whole lot of birds flying around you. There is a giant net on top of the cage so you can walk freely in it.

  • Insects and butterflies (paying): we did not enter here because our interest was not that high to pay for it.

You can go from one zone into an another without any problems. There were some maintenance works ongoing so a couple of animals were relocated and some were not accessible. Normally if every animal would be in the right cage, you get a lot of information about the habitat, if they are a vulnerable species and all the other information you want thanks to the signs in front of the cages.
