When we were in San Cristóbal de las Casas we were looking for a bus to take us to our next stop: Palenque. First we searched for an ADO overnight bus, but the hours were terrible. Or you could leave at 10pm and arrive in the middle of the night in Palenque (where do you go to then?) or you could take a day bus, but we are not that fond of that since you loose an entire day just for driving. The price for these buses started at 300 MXN. But what if I tell you there is also another solution? One where you don’t loose useless time during the day or you’re not hanging around a city center like a homeless guy? The owner of the hostel we stayed in (Gite del Sol) told us that you could also book a tour, that left at 4 am in the morning that went to Palenque. During that trip you also visited Agua Azul and Misol-Ha and that for also 300 MXN. Good deal so we took it!
We must also say that sometimes the road that the minivans take (different one from the ADO bus company, it takes you there in 6 hours instead of 10 hours) is sometimes closed. We were in luck that a couple of days before they opened the road again so we could pass freely. The road blocks are from striking teachers. The exact reason? I don’t know so feel free to send us more information about this!
It was a very short night, but the minivan came and picked us up outside of our hostel. After a 2 hour drive we stopped at a place where you got a 45 minute break to have breakfast if you wanted and then we drove further to Agua Azul.
The Cascadas de Agua Azul ("Blue-water Falls") are a series of waterfalls found on the Xanil River in the Chiapas, Mexico. Approximately 69 kilometers from Palenque. Believe me, it's really nice as you can see for yourself in the following video:
Being 2 hours at Agua Azul it was time to go further. Next we went to the Cascada de Misol-Ha (Ch’ol language for "Water Falls"). It is a waterfall located in the Municipality of Salto de Agua, 20 kilometers from Palenque. This waterfall consists of one single cascade of 35 m of height that falls into a single almost circular pool admits tropical vegetation. You are able to walk behind the waterfall to see it from a different angle and there is also a cave you can visit there.
At both waterfalls you had the opportunity to swim, but our heart wasn't that in to it with those temperatures...
One hour has passed and back into to van to Palenque. We decided not to join the trip to the ruins, since we wanted to do that at our own pace another day. The nicest driver ever, since he dropped us of right in front of our hostel Kin Balam, thank you for letting us walk less.
And now photo spam! Especially a lot of water to see :)
